The Enclave

5+design

The Enclave is a 25,000-square-foot retail project located in Torrance, California that is revitalizing an area through thoughtful planning and activation. Situated between two 9-story office towers, the project takes on the form of a vibrant retail and civic center tailored to meet the needs of both the office occupants and the broader South Bay community.

This holistic vision translates into revitalized lobbies, integrated architectural elements, and an additional 25,000 square feet of landscaped meeting spaces, meticulously crafted to encourage collaboration and engagement. With over 40 plant and tree species, The Enclave creates a small-scale urban oasis in the middle of the city’s industrial zone. Designed to accommodate a full day's worth of experiences, The Enclave seamlessly transitions from morning moments of coffee and refreshments to the energetic activities of lunchtime, before settling into a more serene afternoon interlude and ending in vibrant evening engagements. During weekends, The Enclave evolves into a bustling hub for family-focused interactions. Emphasizing design continuity and indoor-outdoor connectivity, the project features a strong cross-axis that directs attention toward the central courtyard. To enhance this synergy indoors, each building integrates retractable walls that open to the outside. Secluded alcoves define the project's surrounding areas, fostering intimacy and encouraging exploration and play. The project's commitment to outdoor integration extends to the renovation of the two office lobbies, where vibrant gardens spill out from each entrance. Open, retractable walls blur the line between indoor and outdoor, providing views of the garden, fresh air circulation, and abundant natural light. Inside the lobbies, a lattice of suspended wooden slats adds warmth to the interior while reinforcing the connection to nature. Adjacent to the lobbies, two organic orchards and herb gardens offer seating amidst citrus trees and herb planters, further enhancing the outdoor experience. Sustainability lies at the core of the design, as evidenced by several project elements. These include water-efficient irrigation systems and the cultivation of over 40 native or drought-tolerant plant and tree species. This diverse selection not only fosters a pollinator-friendly habitat but also offers natural shading and cooling throughout the project. Additional passive cooling measures, such as shade structures and project orientation, enhance airflow and establish wind channels between different axes. To further reduce the project’s carbon footprint, a significant portion of the outdoor furniture was crafted from repurposed materials. Additionally, the project prominently features EV charging stations in the south lot, with plans to expand into a collection of Tesla Superchargers. Further sustainability initiatives include a shared bike system offering a fleet of 30 colorful on-site bikes for tenants and a waterless car wash located at the southwest end of the site. Collectively, these sustainable design choices enhance both the project's aesthetics and overall functionality. Beyond its food and beverage retail offerings, The Enclave's multi-functional, flexible spaces offer customizable experiences with eclectic options for socialization, relaxation, games, and meetings.
