Port of Montréal Tower
Provencher_Roy
Underscoring the Old Port’s industrial past, the Port of Montréal Tower’s concrete and steel structure reminiscent of the historic towers of the site is harmoniously integrated into the setting. The Tower has become the guardian of memory on the site, symbolizing a new era while respecting the vestiges of the past. Beyond its historical significance, the Tower has also become an attractive destination unto itself, offering a 360-degree observatory on the 13th floor that is accessible to the public and available for event rentals. A wooden helicoid staircase reminiscent of typical Montréal streetscapes guides the visitor towards a vertiginous experience. Compact and focused on fluid circulation, the project freed up a space at the tip of the pier entitled Place des commencements, offering Montréalers new access to the River. Despite the technical challenges related to construction on a pier with limited access, Provencher_Roy has successfully melded aesthetics and functionality through integrating an exposed concrete structure, making the Tower into an exemplary urban renovation project.
