Majiabang Culture Museum

Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd.

The Majiabang Culture Museum is located in the southwest district of theJiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone, a suburbanarea. To the southwest of the museum lies a protected Majiabangculture area, where just a few vestiges remain of the Neolithic Majiabangculture dating back 7,000 years. To the north and east of the museumlies the so-called Development Zone: an expanse of grasslands, ricefields, and water networks long left untouched, making the site aluxuriant natural setting.

Inspired by archaeology, "patchwork" serves as the design concept, while "settlement" becomes an important strategy for organizing space. The settlement itself is disorderly and irrational, but complex symbiotic relationships exist between settlement units. In the design process, several simple but disorderly geometric units are combined and assembled, presenting a primitive and handmade feeling. The combination of units creates a rich and interesting path for exploration, just like primitive settlements where each hut has relative independence, yet the units also form intricate blank spaces between them.
