Kunming Taihe 1903 Regional Urban Renewal
Benoy
The Taihe 1903 Urban Renewal Project is located in Kunming– which is also referred as Dian, the capital of Yunnan Province. It is at the core area of the first ring of Kunming, at the southern end of Beijing Road – one of the main axis of Kunming affiliated to the China (Yunnan) Free Trade Pilot Zone. It is a key area for Kunming's economic and trade opening to the outside world. It is the starting point of the Pan-Asia Railway, transporting more than 25 million passengers per year and about 70,000 passengers per day. An urban public transportation hub is located within the plot, covering 4 Metro Lines and 35 bus lines, connecting the entire southwest of China. In 1903, the Yunnan–Haiphong railway, one of the oldest historical railways in China, started construction, with its starting point at the northern end of our site. In 1966, the newly built Kunming Railway Station was completed, located at the southern end of our site, with two diagonal ancient river channels and urban green nodes on the east and west sides, forming a unique diamond-shaped site for the project. Background: With the economic takeoff of the reform and opening up, the disorderly urban planning and backward management system have led to disorganized growth of the city. As the new urban areas continue to develop, better infrastructure and landscape resources are constantly siphoning off the vitality of the old city. Project Analysis: For the existing buildings, the project divides the scope of renovation and reconstruction through multidimensional research and evaluation of building quality, age, historical value and commercial value, all of which strive to balance and consider the overall image enhancement and feasibility of urban renewal through staged, zonal and intensity-based approaches. Based on the upper-level planning land, the project first unblocked the road system, and through the integration of fragmented plots and the introduction of more supporting services, re-integrated the nature of the land use to reshape the public base of the site. Based on the site map and background analysis, the two original naturally formed oblique lines in this area are retained to connect various urban nodes. The project forms a unique diamond-shaped space structure, creating the most dazzling diamond around the Dianchi Lake. Design Concept: From Old Yunnan Station to New Kunming Station, from 1903 to the present, it is hoped that through the design of time and space connection, on the basis of the diamond-shaped spatial structure, the development of mixed functions of ecology, production, life and commercial vitality will be introduced, with ecology as the foundation, carving a multidimensional garden city. With the integration of innovation and entrepreneurship, the production axis is created, and a people-oriented, high-quality international community is created, with business as the core, injecting vitality into the regional evolution and iteration. Finally, a city space structure of one ring, two axes, and four quadrants is formed.
