K11 Shanghai, Huaihai Middle Road
Lead8
The destination has been designed as a cultural experience in nature with living gardens surrounded by history, retail, dining, and art. Home to individual ‘maisons’, the scheme elevates luxury retail with one-of-a-kind opportunities to deliver an immersive brand experience. Aspiring to become a museum for architectural craftsmanship, the development celebrates an innovative fusion of East and West design. Historic buildings have been preserved on the site and carefully incorporated, including former French Concession Police Buildings, Fire Stations and laneways dating back to the 1900s. The architectural design of the new buildings pays homage to the axial symmetry and classic proportions of the surrounding historic buildings, and those famous within the French Concession. The architectural detailing combines historical façade elements with Chinese and European decorative details and patterns, such as the Shanghai-style arches found on Huaihai Road, traditional Chinese Fangshen patterns, curved bricklaying and French pointed arches and mouldings. The French Concession’s characteristic pitch roofs and neighbouring Huaihai Park, have also inspired a continuous green ridge through the new K11 Shanghai, enhancing a connection to nature. A network of green pedestrian bridges connects the buildings above ground and a glass greenhouse ridge creates living biophilic double-height retail spaces amongst the brand ‘maisons’. The destination has been designed to meet the requirements of a ‘sponge city’ and the certification criteria of China Green Building Label Three-star, LEED Platinum and WELL Gold. The buildings’ designs and layouts have incorporated natural ventilation, sunlight, and pedestrianisation, together with solar energy and water recycling to achieve environmental efficiencies. The development also explores its planning potential to improve accessibility throughout Huaihai Road’s commercial circles. The new K11 Shanghai is easily accessible via the city’s metro system and introduces new pedestrian thoroughfares in the area. This strategic pedestrianisation planning enhances the user experience, offering a more pleasurable journey away from busy vehicular roads with new routes through the development and into Huaihai Park’s 30,000 sqm of parkland. Overall, K11 Shanghai, Huaihai Middle Road aims to become the future heart of the city’s cultural district – uniting historic glamour, artistry, modernity and nature in this famous Shanghai quarter. K11 Shanghai, Huaihai Middle Road is currently under construction.
