Hotel Avándaro

Chain + Siman

The Hotel Avándaro renovation by Chain + Siman focused on integrating the building with the natural landscape of Valle de Bravo while modernizing key areas. The project balanced the preservation of the hotel’s historical elements—such as sloping roofs and wooden beams—along with contemporary needs.

One of the main challenges was maintaining a connection to the surrounding environment. Local materials, including wood and stone, helped integrate the design with the natural landscape. This connection was further emphasized through the use of natural textures in both common areas and guest rooms, creating an experience that allowed guests to feel in harmony with nature while enjoying modern amenities. Sustainability played a significant role in the renovation. Solar panels were installed to meet 42.6% of the hotel’s energy needs, with an estimated generation of 321,581 kWh during the first year post-expansion. The focus on renewable energy aligns with trends in the hospitality industry toward reducing environmental impact. The renovation also included a rainwater collection and reuse system, integrated discreetly into the architecture. This system helped reduce reliance on potable water by supplying non-potable areas, such as gardens and restrooms, contributing to the hotel’s sustainability goals. A key focus of the renovation was creating distinct spaces for convention groups and regular guests. Before the renovation, these groups often shared areas, causing congestion. The new layout carefully separates these spaces, allowing each group to enjoy the hotel without disruption. The convention areas foster a professional environment, while the guest spaces are designed for relaxation, offering panoramic views and access to recreational facilities. The restaurant also underwent significant changes, now taking advantage of natural light through large windows and pergolas, which connect the interior with the exterior. This design enhances the dining experience and reinforces the connection between the architecture and nature. Seating areas along the portico offer a welcoming atmosphere, setting the tone for guests' stays. Lighting was also crucial in the renovation, not just for aesthetic purposes but also to highlight natural materials like wood and stone. In the convention center, lighting helps create a comfortable and professional atmosphere, while in other areas, it reinforces the building's connection to its natural surroundings. Respect for the hotel’s identity was a guiding principle in the project. The renovation aimed to integrate with both the natural environment and the urban context of Valle de Bravo. Materials and colors were chosen to reflect the character of both the landscape and the community, positioning the hotel as part of the region’s cultural fabric. In addition to energy and water management, the renovation reduced the environmental impact by preserving existing structural elements instead of demolishing them. The use of local materials minimized the project's carbon footprint and supported the local economy by involving regional craftsmen and businesses. In conclusion, the Hotel Avándaro renovation illustrates how architecture can blend historical preservation with modern needs while adopting sustainable practices. The project successfully met the needs of modern guests while respecting the natural and cultural environment of Valle de Bravo.
