Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas
Guerin Glass Architects
Located on the East Cape of Los Cabos, Mexico, the resort is comprised of 146 guest rooms, multiple food and beverages venues, a spa, fitness center, 18-hole golf course, central retail village and conference facility, set within a pristine 2400-acre site affronting a tranquil shoreline of the Gulf of California. Design Narrative The design of the resort embraces the natural beauty of its coastal desert surroundings, creating a seamless blend between architecture and landscape. Guests are welcomed into a carefully curated experience that begins upon arrival, guiding them through spaces where the built environment meets the organic, immersing them in the textures and colors of the landscape. Planning strategies for the resort focused on intimacy, scale and sustainability, with guest residences arranged in small clusters with unobstructed sea views, positioned in arcing formations along the shoreline. Each building is nested into an elevated ground plane and approached on the second level. The result is a substantially decreased building scale, the creation of framed sea vistas from private entries for every guest unit and the ability to conceal support services in a subterranean level. The architectural expression of the guest buildings transitions from a composition of textured solids experienced by guests upon arrival, to fully glazed volumes facing the sea, with deep set balconies and a lattice work screening system providing passive privacy and shading. Each guest will experience this transition, arriving in their own private indoor / outdoor space, enjoying a strong connection to the outdoors with unobstructed views across organic pools set within a landscape of native sea grasses and palms – out to the horizon beyond. At the heart of the resort, the central lobby is defined by a bold cantilevered roof and monumental stone piers. The horizontality of the architecture echoing the intersection of sea and sky along the Gulf of California, while standing in contrast to the organic lines of the extensive plant life and distant coastal mountains that physically and visually flow through the space. The resulting experience for guests of occupying this interstitial space between architecture and nature, reaffirms them of their place ‘within’ the native landscape, but with the comfort and security of a lightly defined space. Throughout the resort, materials, textures, and light are carefully considered to enhance the sensory experience, reflecting the essence of the coastal desert. The integration of architecture and landscape fosters a unique experience that highlights the cultural and natural beauty of the location, offering guests a sense of being deeply connected to their environment. The resort is also deeply connected to the local community through a non-profit initiative that trains residents for jobs in hospitality, farming, and support roles. This program helps boost the local economy and ensures that the community benefits from the resort’s presence, while simultaneously strengthening its ties to the region and enhancing the guest experience.
