The South Golden Bay project is located in Chengdu, in the southwestern region of China. Positioned in the central core lake area of Luxelakes, the site consists of several peninsulas. The region is characterized by undulating terrain, a meandering shoreline, and an excellent natural ecological foundation, offering expansive views of the lake. The primary challenge for the design team was how to seamlessly integrate artificial design elements into the site without compromising its original natural ecology, achieving a perfect harmony between nature and human activity.

The project’s design is guided by the following principles: • Respect for Topography: Preserving the site’s natural attributes to ensure optimal spacing between buildings and unobstructed views of the lake. This approach allows the architecture to harmonize with the natural terrain. • Balance Between Ecology and Urban Development: Striking a balance between ecological sustainability and urban growth while exploring the site’s unique spirit. The design embraces a return to nature and a spatial philosophy rooted in simplicity and authenticity. • Diverse Functional Needs: Creating a green, eco-friendly, and sustainable space that meets varied residential and recreational demands. Leveraging the site’s unique advantages, the project adopts “Over the Wilderness” as its core design theme, employing a light landscape intervention approach to craft a diverse range of spatial experiences. The design transitions seamlessly from the open waters of the lake to the wetlands along the shore, from rolling meadows to tiered architectural forms, and finally to elevated viewing platforms in the air. These layers create a dynamic interplay between horizontal and vertical dimensions, as well as open and intimate spaces, enriching the user’s sense of curiosity and exploration. The site as a whole evokes a sense of natural growth, as if emerging organically from the wilderness, forming a layout where architecture and nature interpenetrate each other. The development of the South Golden Bay successfully achieves a harmonious coexistence between architecture, daily life, people, and water. It offers valuable insights into urban ecological restoration. In addition to serving as a demonstration of ecological, cultural, and residential ideals, the site is envisioned as an important window for showcasing a new way of life. It is designed to accommodate non-standardized commercial models in the future, encompassing lifestyle retail, hospitality, dining, art, culture, and nature-driven social spaces. This will help attract visitors, foster community cohesion, and promote economic and cultural growth.
