Bahamas Residence

Bahamas Residence marks the first Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors project across international waters. We are thrilled to be crafting a new world residence for one of the region’s finest beaches.

The client for this project, based in the US and vacationing in the Bahamas, discovered RMA through the World Architecture Awards. Drawn to RMA’s iconic coastal residences, they sought out our practice to create a contemporary beachfront home after finding local resources insufficient to realise their progressive vision. They envisioned a home that would stand as a beacon of modern design, breaking away from the island's traditionally French-Mediterranean style to introduce a fresh and forward-thinking aesthetic. RMA embraced this challenge. While still deeply informed by the natural sweep of the land, the design boldly departs from the conventional local architectural tradition. The residence is unashamedly new world in its character, inspired by the work of visionary architects such as Fritz Niemeyer and Eero Saarinen. This approach introduces a refreshing boldness, vitality, and youthful energy to the island’s architectural landscape to redefine luxury in a tropical context. The dramatic boomerang shape of the building was designed to frame not only views of the ocean but also to capture the picturesque beauty of the coastline in both directions. The building’s distinctive form also creates a natural shelter, protecting residents from winds while also establishing a serene space for relaxation. The sweeping curves of the structure are both visually striking and functionally significant. The boomerang shape symbolises the power and energy of RMA’s client, while also providing a place of relaxation. These contrasting elements give the structure its unique appeal—drawing residents inward for protection from the elements and creating views outward to embrace the expansive tropical vistas. The design, therefore, reflects the client's desire for a home that is both a sanctuary and a statement. Inside, an RMA signature spiral staircase anchors the elbow of the boomerang, connecting the casual and formal dining areas in opposing wings, fronted by an elegant pool. The large-scale kitchen, designed for entertaining on a grand scale, reflects the stature of this private beach. Upstairs, bedrooms for children and guests offer places of private retreat, while the downstairs level provides a suite of recreation facilities, including a gym, cinema and wine cellar. The material palette, rich in natural timbers and stone, allows the surrounding landscape to take centre stage. The design for Bahamas Residence captures the unique environment of this exceptional location—its power and beauty—and the ambition of our client. A place where a young family can come together, in a world-class beachfront home that looks to the future.
