Agnes KSB Kantonsspital Baden
Nickl & Partner Architekten Schweiz AG
The Kantonsspital Baden Agnes isn’t just a new building—it’s a bold reimagining of what healthcare architecture can achieve. Faced with the choice to renovate or rebuild, the decision to construct anew unlocked extraordinary potential: a hospital that not only expands capacity and improves efficiency by 30%, but also establishes itself as a living, breathing part of the city, seamlessly blending urban life with cutting-edge medical care. Architecture Designed to Heal At its core, the KSB embodies the principles of Healing Architecture: every detail, from the flow of light to the materials is engineered to promote recovery and well-being. Eleven courtyards and floor-to-ceiling windows flood interiors with natural light, dissolving the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Patients and staff alike benefit from a connection to nature that science has proven to aid healing and reduce stress. Warm, locally sourced materials, including Swiss stone pine from Baden’s city forest, bring a natural tranquility to high-traffic areas such as patient wards. These materials don’t just look good—they represent a commitment to sustainability and the community, a reminder that hospitals are about people, not just technology. Sustainability as a Core Value The KSB doesn’t just meet sustainability standards—it sets them. A geothermal heating system and wood chip power plant cut energy use, while over 180m³ of sustainably sourced wood strengthens the local economy and reduces the building’s ecological footprint. This is more than a hospital; it’s a statement of environmental responsibility, proving that high performance and sustainability go hand in hand. The Future of Smart Healthcare The digital revolution is at the heart of the KSB. As Switzerland’s first hospital to fully integrate Building Information Modeling (BIM), the entire facility is digitally mapped, allowing for precision in every stage—from construction to long-term maintenance. Over 7,000 IoT sensors power a smarter hospital, optimizing energy use, streamlining workflows, and improving patient outcomes. Telemedicine and telemonitoring extend care beyond the hospital walls, meeting the growing demand for decentralized, outpatient care. A sophisticated navigation system ensures patients and visitors find their way with ease, further enhancing the user experience. A New Era in Healthcare Begins When the KSB opens its doors on February 25, 2025, it will represent more than the culmination of advanced technology and sustainable design. It will mark the beginning of a new era in healthcare: one where hospitals are not just places to treat illness but environments that foster healing, connection, and innovation. This is more than a hospital. It’s a model for the future of healthcare—and a vision brought to life.
